Open Call | Hiatus Collective
The time has finally come. The thing that I have had in my head these last few months might actually become a reality. The idea I have spent time thinking, am I doing the right thing? Will this work? Does this actually have any legs to stand on? Well. this will be the first step to finding these things out.
Hiatus Collective is a cross-arts collective whose aim is to encourage and support those whose voices are rarely heard. We consist of four artists. This will soon expand with amazing participants in our Open Call (which I’ll discuss later on).
The idea begun from an inner frustration that my work is collaborative and such work will be a real struggle to manifest itself, if I go it alone. Also, my desire to make my own artwork has somewhat diminished. It comes and goes. So instead, making a group where we can share this experience, make stronger, impactful, thought provoking work. This will be achievable, because we are a team of people with the same goal.

The ethos of the group stems from my work with the stammering community and the affinity I have with the disability community. It is such a fascinating, changeable world, of storytelling. Everyone is unique. Everyone has their own challenges. Hiatus accepts these challenges and wants to make a positive change from those challenges. The ethos / agreement that individuals sign when they become an artist in residence with us is crucial to the environment for making art to be a comfortable and stimulating one.
We wish to value speech as important, valuable and individual. We wish to appreciate silence as a space for things to happen. We encourage respectful listening just as important as making contributions. We encourage an open mind towards creating, not dismissing anything necessarily, taking it all in, then rationalising. Fundamentally, one key value of Hiatus is perhaps putting someone else before yourself? This culture of kindness, respectfulness and decency is something I want to manifest and nuture within Hiatus. I’m by no means strict about this, but I want to attempt to promote these values to our artists and participants.

Now onto the important stuff. The way we decided to launch the collective to test the waters and gather interest is through an Open Call opportunity. We want people to hear about Hiatus and think about what they can contribute. This may reflect their own ‘disability identity’ and neurodiversity. We didn’t wish to limit this at all by a theme or particular format. It’s fairly free and up to the individual.
